Paget Peak, near the Continental Divide, is the end of a long ridge that rises high above Kicking Horse River and Field. This nondescript nubbin provides a view and a feeling of accomplishment that far surpass the actual effort involved in the ascent. Overlooking Sherbrooke and Wapta lakes, it is easily reached via a popular hiking trail to an abandoned fire lookout. You gain almost three-quarters of the elevation on the hiking trail, so you could sleep in and still make the top. The glaciated north face of Mount Victoria, snowy Mount Balfour and distant Selkirk Range peaks are just a fraction of the panorama. Try from late June on.
