MOUNT CARTHEW
Elevation: 2630m
Difficulty: Easy
Round Trip Time: 4-6 hours
Height Gain: 1000 m
Map: 82 G/1 Sage Creek |
Though more of a plod than a scramble, Mount Carthew is
sometimes ascended by day-trippers hiking Carthew-Alderson
trail or as a destination in itself. The ascent is a minor but
worthwhile diversion from the trail. From the top you can
wistfully study more impressive summits in nearby Glacier Park
and a choice of two routes up offer variety. Try from late
June on. |

From
the trail above tiny Summit Lake switch-backing trails are
easily seen in the red argillite leading up to the false
summit of Mount Carthew. The true summit lies nearly a
kilometer north of the peak seen here. |
